What is STIR/SHAKEN and why is it needed

STIR/SHAKEN is a protocol developed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to ensure that telephone calls between VSPs are verified and trusted. It does this by attaching digital certificates to calls, which can then be compared with details about the identity of the caller. These certificates allow for better monitoring and verification of phone numbers, allowing users to trust that calls from authorized and legitimate providers are verified by a third-party source. With this new technology, the FCC is hoping to reduce telephone call fraud and protect consumers from scams, leading to a more secure calling environment for all users.

How does STIR/SHAKEN work

STIR/SHAKEN is an important call authentication framework that allows phone carriers to verify phone numbers and battle the issue of robocalling. The system works by having the originating (calling) carrier sign each telephone number using digital certificates. This information is then transmitted to the terminating (called) carrier, which verifies it. If the signature matches, it confirms that the caller is legitimate and not spoofed or malicious. With its intent to provide industry-wide security against spoofing, STIR/SHAKEN will enable providers to report calls they believe are fraudulent or untrustworthy and ensure that users have greater control over who is calling them and why. By June 30th, 2022 all VSPs must comply with STIR/SHAKEN regulations in order to remain compliant.

After almost five years of trouble-free service, my Voiply connection failed. I visited the website and chatted with a robot, who instructed me to check all my wire connections. I thought, That's what they all tell you, and it never solves the problem." The robot connected me with a live agent who told me to check all my wire connections. She was more insistent than the robot and eventually determined that the connection to my modem was faulty. I connected the cable to a different port, and the system was restored. The moral of the story....Listen to your agent. She knows more than you do and is there to help you.

I've been very happy with Voiply. I've had to use the service twice now and it has been very easy to start, stop, and then start again. The latest restart was very easy especially now that Voiply has added an AI layer to their chat and overall system. When I've needed an agent they have been available and very helpful.
